The Giving Fund
October 19, 2020 Becca Nichols Many who know of and support The Human Solution International are aware of our work to help cannabis defendants and prisoners who have been negatively affected by cannabis prohibition through court support, letter writing, and calls to action. Cannabis prohibition work has been at the forefront of the work we do but is by no means all that THSI does. The Human Solution International is first and foremost a civil rights organization. As the CoronaVirus shuts down or slows court proceedings across the United States we have had time to explore other causes that are near to the heart of our organization as well as reflect on the work we have done that may have gone unnoticed. One tool that we have is to raise money free of fees and that is a tax-deductible donation. Raising money for an emergency need can be intimidating and emotionally difficult which is why THSI developed The Giving Fund, a year ago, We saw a need to offer our organization's abilities to help those in need. Since launching The Giving Fund we have raised $5, 630 for four different families including what has been raised during a current ongoing fundraiser. The first fundraiser that launched this was for Glenn Keeling and Peggy Sue Kimmel. Glenn and Peggy were two defendants facing felony cannabis charges for treating Peggy’s M.S. and Glenn’s Crohn's disease. While fighting their case their only working vehicle broke down rendering them unable to get Peggy to her many Dr.’s appointments in the small town of Celina Ohio. With The Giving Fund, we were able to get their vehicle repaired and them back on the road in a very short time. Through hard work and overwhelming community support, both Glenn and Peggy received probation and no prison time. You can read more about their case here: https://www.thsintl.org/news/medical-marijuana-in-ohio-legal-or-not To feed a community was a joint effort between THSI and Seeds for Change which was founded by Mandi Hughes from COCW. Seeds for Change was feeding approximately 30 people who may have not eaten otherwise who were living at the Texas Music Ranch and had been severely impacted by the CoronaVirus. We were able to raise $428.00 that purchased enough food to feed them for several weeks. You can find out more about Seeds for Change here https://www.facebook.com/seedsforchangeevents Once Glenn and Peggy’s case was settled they were saddled with $1, 440 in court fees. With Peggy being disabled and Glenn struggling to find work after losing his job due to the CoronaVirus they were unable to pay the fines. Our fundraising raised more than was needed at $1,762.00. The remaining $322.00 will go towards Glenn’s portion of his public defender costs. Our current fundraiser is benefiting another couple from our community, Candice and Jason Dyer. The Dyers work tirelessly for their community and never ask for anything back and do so with a humility rarely seen. Through circumstances out of their control, they found themselves and their daughter without a home. A fundraiser was started on October 9, 2020, has already raised $2,580.00 of the $4000.00 goal to get them an RV to live in. $400.00 of which came from the Dyer’s themselves. If you would like to donate or share this fundraiser go here https://www.facebook.com/donate/1140042659725531/10159268809049386/ Stay tuned for more updates and articles about the civil rights and community outreach THSI has engaged in and planning to do. As we grow we evolve. We here at THSI strive to do what we can to make this a better world for everyone. We are so much more than a cannabis organization.
